Waldorf Is Booming in China

This article gives a great picture of the origins of the booming Waldorf movement in China, their strengths, and some of the challenges that the Chinese face. In the seven years since the Chengdu Waldorf School opened its doors, over one hundred kindergartens have sprung up all over China. In 1994 Ben and Thanh Cherry, teachers at the Bowral Waldorf School in Australia, visited China. During their travels, they met and spoke with many people about Waldorf Education. On the veranda of a teahouse in the city of Chengdu, in southwest China, they spoke with a young couple, HarryWong and his wife, Li Zhang. That conversation was the seed of Waldorf Education planted in China. It inspired Harry and Li to go to England and then America to study Waldorf Education. Earthship: The Freetown Express by Mike Reynolds

In October 2011, acclaimed eco-architect Mike Reynolds and his crew will travel to Sierra Leone to build the world’s first Earthship school for The Goderich Waldorf School. This charity run school began life in 2001 in a tiny beach hut at the end of the ten year civil war. It is now a thriving school of 90 children between classes 1 – 3 in the village of Rokel. Due to new government regulations, the school would have closed in August 2011 unless money was raised for a building. Thanks to a generous donation through RSF Social Finance which came from a longtime supporter of both Waldorf education and eco-architecture, the Goderich Waldorf School can stay open. Whilst we have progressions for children’s musical and instrumental development, it is hard to find such developmental progressions regarding what we should expect in terms of children’s vocal development – namely what is NATURAL for their voices to do – or how to listen for the sounds of this development. Surely we should have concerns about this, given the goal of matching all aspects of children’s music making to their innate development? More »
Uncovering the Voice - Christiaan Boele Talks About How To Uncover Our Voices and the Future of Singing

This approach to singing was initiated by Mrs. Valborg Werbeck Svardstrom, a Swedish singer who developed this in cooperation with Rudolf Steiner. It is based on the belief that every human being has their own unique singing voice. Through uncovering, or unveiling, our voices, we can learn to connect more fully to that which wants to speak through our voices: to our deeper, inner ideals and impulses which we are looking for in our lives.
